Working aboard a Windjammer is both rewarding and fun, and will impact you with experiences, skills, and memories applicable for a life time. Ideal applicants are available for the entire season, April 1, through October 15, unless otherwise indicated. All positions on the Timberwind require hard work, utilizing intelligence, strength, agility, and the ability to work aloft. Leadership skills and an outgoing personality are equally important to years of sailing experience.
Positions available:

Responsible to the Captain in all matters related to supervision of vessel fit-out, rigging, de rigging, and winter lay up, as well as daily operations while under way and in port. The mate is expected to maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the vessel through out the season as well as sailing, navigation, work aloft, and marlinspike seamanship. The mate is also responsible for training the crew in accordance with the Captains wishes. The mate will also be required to operate the vessels “yawl boat” and a license is preferred. The mate has no official galley responsibilities, and stands no watches when in port.
Deckhand: no experience required: (April through October)

(Must know; or be able to learn how, to sand and paint) Deckhands will be directly involved in the operations and sailing of the Schooner, and must be able to maintain a cheerful attitude while interacting and working and living in close proximity to others. Deckhands will stand watches both under way and in port. Deckhands will provide services to the galley as required, and will at all times maintain the vessels cleanliness and appearance.
Mess Mate: no experience required: May through Oct (April through Oct optional)

Under the direct supervision of the cook, a mess mate must also be willing to step in and cover for the cook in the event of illness or unforeseen circumstances. Additional responsibilities include 1) maintaining a clean galley and being responsible for the washing of all pots and pans, as well as the supervision of the general dishwashing routine. 2) Keeping track of galley stores, including wood, and assisting the cook when restocking during the turnarounds. The mess mate stands no watches, but is encouraged to learn about, and help with the sailing of the vessel when opportunity permits.
